Subroto

Called up Subroto. What he told me about the current crisis he's wading through dropped a bomb on me. Clearly this fellow has been unlucky and I'm always expecting to hear something horrendous each time I hear of him, but even this wasn't enough to brace me for what he would be telling me.

It's easy to be judgmental and accuse him of screwing up his own life and I'm sure part of the blame squarely lies on him. Still, I can't feel sorry for the poor chap. He's been so misguided by the Martinet.

This is what Bertrand Russell said about religion...

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. ... A good world needs knowledge, kindliness, and courage; it does not need a regretful hankering after the past or a fettering of the free intelligence by the words uttered long ago by ignorant men.
